Opinions from Users Across the Lifespan about Fully Autonomous and Rideshare Vehicles with Associated Features

Fully autonomous vehicles have the potential to fundamentally transform the future transportation system. While previous research has examined individuals’ perceptions towards fully autonomous vehicles, a complete understanding of attitudes and opinions across the lifespan is unknown. Therefore, individuals’ awareness, acceptance, and preferences towards autonomous vehicles were obtained from 75 participants through interviews with three diverse groups of participants: 20 automotive engineering graduate students who were building an autonomous concept vehicle, 21 non-technical adults, and 34 senior citizens. The results showed that regardless of age, an individual’s readiness to ride in a fully autonomous vehicle and the vehicle’s requirements were influenced by the users’ understanding of autonomous vehicles.

Refinements of the Dynamic Inversion Part of Hierarchical 4WIS/4WID Trajectory Tracking Controllers

To tackle the over-actuated and highly nonlinear characteristics that four-wheel-independent-steering and four-wheel-independent -driving (4WIS/4WID) vehicles exhibit when tracking aggressive trajectory, a hierarchical controller with layers of computation-intensive modules is commonly adopted. The high-level linear motion controller commands the desired state derivatives of the vehicle to meet the overall trajectory tracking objectives. Then the system dynamic is inversed by the mid-level control allocation layer and the low-level wheel control layer to map the target state derivatives to steering angle and motor torque commands. However, this type of controller is difficult to implement on the embedded hardware onboard since the nonlinear dynamic inversion is typically solved by nonlinear programming.

A Collision Avoidance Strategy Based on Inevitable Collision State

This paper proposed a collision avoidance strategy that take over the control of ego vehicle when faced with urgent collision risk. To improve the applicability of collision avoidance strategy in complex scenarios, the theory of ICS (Inevitable Collision State) is introduced to evaluate the collision risk and compute the trigger flag of the system, and vehicle dynamic is taken into account when modeling ego vehicle to predict ego vehicle’s following moving. Vehicle specific characteristics including reaction time of the braking system and the braking force increasing process are taken into account. In order to reduce injury caused by collision accidents and minimize disruption to drivers, slight steering is added on top of emergency braking. The direction of the steering angle is determined according to IM (Imitating Maneuvers) The flow chart of the strategy is presented in the paper.

Study on Cavitation Effect of Hydraulic Retarder

Hydraulic retarder is important auxiliary brake device which widely used in commercial vehicles for its economy, safety and driving comfort, however cavitation will occur and reduce the braking performance when hydraulic retarder operates at high speed. In this paper, a model of hydraulic retarder considering cavitation effect was established, and the reliability of the model was verified by comparing with the external characteristics of the product which was obtained from Voith’s official discloses data. Then the cavitation of hydraulic retarder under high-speed working condition was studied by the establishing simulation model. The simulation model can describe and analyze the internal flow field in the hydraulic retarder, and can be used as an important tool for the development and optimization of hydraulic retarder in the future. When hydraulic retarder’s rotational speed is about 1500rpm, the cavitation will be observed in the working chamber.

Multi-Objective Adaptive Cruise Control via Deep Reinforcement Learning

This work presents a multi-objective adaptive cruise control (ACC) system via deep reinforcement learning (DRL). During the control period, it quantitatively considers three indexes: tracking accuracy, riding comfort, and fuel economy. The system balances contradictions between different indexes to achieve the best overall control results. First, a hierarchical control architecture is utilized, where the upper level controller is synthesized under DRL framework to give out the vehicle desired acceleration. The lower level controller executes the command and compensates vehicle dynamics. Then, four state variables that can comprehensively determine the car-following states are selected for better convergence. Multi-objective reward function is quantitatively designed referring to the evaluation indexes, in which safety constraints are considered by adding violation penalty. Thereafter, the training environment which excludes the disturbance of preceding car acceleration is built.

Criticality Assessment of Simulation-Based AV/ADAS Test Scenarios

Testing any new safety technology of Autonomous Vehicles (AV) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) requires simulation-based validation and verification. The specific scenarios used for testing, outline incidences of accidents or near-miss events. In order to simulate these scenarios, specific values for all the above parameters are required including the ego vehicle model. The ‘criticality’ of a scenario is defined in terms of the difficulty level of the safety maneuver. A scenario could be over-critical, critical, or under-critical. In over-critical scenarios, it is impossible to avoid a crash whereas, for under-critical scenarios, no action may be required to avoid a crash. The criticality of the scenario depends on various parameters e.g. speeds, distances, road/tire parameters, etc. In this paper, we propose a definition of criticality metric and identify the parameters such that a scenario becomes critical.

The driving power system can be combined with lasers, lights, etc., and applied to automobiles to achieve various functions. Under the general trend of the development of intelligent vehicles, people have higher and higher requirements for the accuracy and power of various equipment. However, as power increases, how to ensure the stability of factors such as current is a challenging problem. Therefore, it is extremely important to study and design a high-power drive system in this paper, so as to ensure a stable output of the current. The system is composed of power supply, load, secondary power supply and control chip. The choice of power supply and load is conventional model. The secondary power supply adopts step-down circuit, with synchronous rectifier chip, which can effectively reduce energy consumption, and with temperature protection device, which can ensure the safe and reliable operation of equipment.

Visual System Analysis of High Speed On-Off Valve Based on Multi-Physics Simulation

High speed on-off valves (HSVs) are widely used in advanced hydraulic braking actuators, including regenerative braking systems and active safety systems, which take crucial part in improving the energy efficiency and safety performance of vehicles. As a component involving multiple physical fields, the HSV is affected by the interaction of the fields-fluid, electromagnetic, and mechanical. Since the opening of the HSV is small and the flow speed is high, cavitation and vortex are inevitably brought out so that increase the valve’s noise and instability. However, it is costly and complex to observe the flow status by visual fluid experiments. Hence, in this article a visual multi-physics system simulation model of the HSV is explored, in which the flow field model of the HSV built by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is co-simulated with the model of hydraulic actuator established by AMESim.

Designing the Design Space: Evaluating Best Practices in Tradespace Exploration, Analysis and Decision-Making

Determining the validity of the design space early in the conceptualization of a project can make the difference between project success and failure. Early assessment of technical feasibility, project risk, technical readiness and realistic performance expectations based on models with different levels of fidelity, uncertainty, and technical robustness is a challenging mission critical task for large procurement projects. Tradespace exploration uses model-based engineering analysis, design exploration methods, and multi-objective optimization techniques to enable project stakeholders to make informed decisions and tradeoffs concerning the scope, schedule, budget, performance and risk profile of a project. As the intersection with a number of project stakeholders, tradespace studies can provide a significant impact upon the direction and decision-making in a project.

Decomposition and Coordination to Support Tradespace Analysis for Ground Vehicle Systems

Tradespace analysis is used to define the characteristics of the solution space for a vehicle design problem enabling decision-makers (DMs) to evaluate the risk-benefit posture of a vehicle design program. The tradespace itself is defined by a set of functional objectives defined by vehicle simulations and evaluating the performance of individual design solutions that are modeled by a set of input variables. Of special interest are efficient design solutions because their perfomance is Pareto meaning that none of their functional objective values can be improved without decaying the value of another objective. The functional objectives are derived from a combination of simulations to determine vehicle performance metrics and direct calculations using vehicle characteristics. The vehicle characteristics represent vendor specifications of vehicle subsystems representing various technologies.

Developing Domain Ontologies and an Integration Ontology to Support Modeling and Simulation of Next-Generation Ground Vehicle Systems

The development of next-generation ground vehicle systems relies on modeling and simulation to predict vehicle performance and conduct trade studies in the design and acquisition process. In this paper, we describe the development of an ontology suite to support modeling and simulation of next generation military ground vehicles. The ontology suite is intended to address model reuse challenges and increase the shared understanding of ground vehicle system simulations. The ontology suite consists of four domain ontologies: Vehicle operations (VehOps), Operational environment (Env), Ground vehicle architecture (VehArch), and Simulation model ontology (SimMod) and one integration ontology. The separate domain ontologies allow for extensibility, while the integration ontology establishes semantic relationships across the domains ontologies.

Detection of Driver’s Cognitive States Based on LightGBM with Multi-Source Fused Data

According to the statistics of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver’s cognitive distraction, which is usually caused by drivers using mobile phones, has become one of the main causes of traffic accidents. To solve this problem and guarantee the safety of man-vehicle-road system, the most critical work is to improve the accuracy of driver’s cognitive state detection. In this paper, a novel driver’s cognitive state detecting method based on LightGBM (Light Gradient Boosting Machine) is proposed. Firstly, cognitive distraction experiments of making calls are carried out on a driving simulator to collect vehicle states, eye tracking and EEG (electron encephalogram) data simultaneously and feature extraction is conducted. Then a classifier considering road and individual characteristics used for detecting cognitive states is trained based on LightGBM algorithm, with 3 predefined cognitive states including concentration, ordinary distraction and extreme distraction.

Strategies for evaluating the impact of mission requirements on the design of mission-specific vehicles are needed to enable project managers to assess potential benefits and associated costs of changes in requirements. Top-level requirements that cause significant cascaded difficulties on lower-level requirements should be identified and presented to decision-makers. This paper aims to introduce formal methods and computational tools to enable the analysis and allocation of mission requirements.

Approaches for Simulation Model Reuse in Systems Design — A Review

In this paper, we review the literature related to the reuse of computer-based simulation models in the context of systems design. Models are used to capture aspects of existing or envisioned systems and are simulated to predict the behavior of these systems. However, developing such models from scratch requires significant time and effort. Researchers have recognized that the time and effort can be reduced if existing models or model components are reused, leading to the study of model reusability. In this paper, we review the tasks necessary to retrieve and reuse model components from repositories, and to prepare new models and model components such that they are more amenable for future reuse. Model reuse can be significantly enhanced by carefully characterizing the model, and capturing its meaning and intent so that potential users can determine whether the model meets their needs.

A Functional Decomposition Approach for Feature-Based Reference Architecture Modeling

Variant modeling techniques have been developed to allow systems engineers to model multiple similar variants in a product line as a single variant model. In this paper, we expand on this past work to explore the extent to which variant modeling in SysML can be applied to a broad range of dissimilar systems, covering the entire domain of ground vehicles, in single reference architecture model. Traditionally, a system’s structure is decomposed into subsystems and components. However, this method is found to be ineffective when modeling variants that are functionally similar but structurally different. We propose to address this challenge by first decomposing the system not only by subsystem but also by high-level function. This pattern is particularly useful for situations where two variants perform the same function, but one variant performs the function using one subsystem, whereas the other variant performs the same function using one or more different subsystems.

A Multi-Objective Power Component Optimal Sizing Model for Battery Electric Vehicles

With recent advances in electric vehicles, there is a plethora of powertrain topologies and components available in the market. Thus, the performance of electric vehicles is highly sensitive to the choice of various powertrain components. This paper presents a multi-objective optimization model that can optimally select component sizes for batteries, supercapacitors, and motors in regular passenger battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). The BEV topology presented here is a hybrid BEV which consists of both a battery pack and a supercapacitor bank. Focus is placed on optimal selection of the battery pack, motor, and supercapacitor combination, from a set of commercially available options, that minimizes the capital cost of the selected power components, the fuel cost over the vehicle lifespan, and the 0-60 mph acceleration time. Available batteries, supercapacitors, and motors are from a market survey.

Automatic Formal Verification of SysML State Machine Diagrams for Vehicular Control Systems

Vehicular control systems are characterized with numerous complex interactions with a steady rise of autonomous functions, which makes it more challenging for designers and safety engineers to identify unexpected failures. These systems tend to be highly integrated and exhibit features like concurrency for which traditional verification and validation techniques (i.e. testing and simulation) are insufficient to provide rigorous and complete assessment. Model Checking, a well-known formal verification technique, can be used to rigorously prove the correctness of such systems according to design Requirements. In particular, Model Checking is a method for formally verifying finite-state concurrent systems. Specifications about the system are expressed as temporal logic formulas, and efficient symbolic algorithms are used to traverse the model defined by the system and check if the specification holds or not.

Implementation Methodologies for Simulation as a Service (SaaS) to Develop ADAS Applications

Over the years, the complexity of autonomous vehicle development (and concurrently the verification and validation) has grown tremendously in terms of component-, subsystem- and system-level interactions between autonomy and the human users. Simulation-based testing holds significant promise in helping to identify both problematic interactions between component-, subsystem-, and system-levels as well as overcoming delays typically introduced by the default full-scale on-road testing. Software in Loop (SiL) simulation is utilized as an intermediate step towards software deployment for autonomous vehicles (AV) to make them reliable. SiL efforts can help reduce the resources required for successful deployment by helping to validate the software for millions of road miles. A key enabler for accelerating SiL processes is the ability to use Simulation as a Service (SaaS) rather than just isolated instances of software.

Teen Drivers’ Understanding of Instrument Cluster Indicators and Warning Lights from a Gasoline, a Hybrid and an Electric Vehicle

In the U.S., the teenage driving population is at the highest risk of being involved in a crash. Teens often demonstrate poor vehicle control skills and poor ability to identify hazards, thus proper understanding of automotive indicators and warnings may be even more critical for this population. This research evaluates teen drivers’, between 15 to 17 years of age, understanding of symbols from vehicles featuring advanced driving assistant systems and multiple powertrain configurations. Teen drivers’ (N=72) understanding of automotive symbols was compared to three other groups with specialized driving experience and technical knowledge: automotive engineering graduate students (N=48), driver rehabilitation specialists (N=16), and performance driving instructors (N=15). Participants matched 42 symbols to their descriptions and then selected the five symbols they considered most important.

A Preliminary Method of Delivering Engineering Design Heuristics

This paper argues the importance of engineering heuristics and introduces an educational data-driven tool to help novice engineers develop their engineering heuristics more effectively. The main objective in engineering practice is to identify opportunities for improvement and apply methods to effect change. Engineers do so by applying ‘how to’ knowledge to make decisions and take actions. This ‘how to’ knowledge is encoded in engineering heuristics. In this paper, we describe a tool that aims to provide heuristic knowledge to users by giving them insight into heuristics applied by experts in similar situations. A repository of automotive data is transformed into a tool with powerful search and data visualization functionalities. The tool can be used to educate novice automotive engineers alongside the current resource intensive practices of teaching engineering heuristics through social methods such as an apprenticeship.
